The Tinderbox
This has been one of my favorite story book illustrations for a very long time.
It's from the The Golden Book of Fairy Tales (Golden Books, 1958). It's an illustration from "The Tinderbox", a story about three gigantic magical dogs.
This beautiful illustration was done by a French illustrator named Adrienne Segur.
This book is available through Amazon.com. It's full of spectacular full color fairy tale pictures by this wonderful artist. A perfect cuddle up book for Grandma to read to her favorite grandchildren.

Opossum sighting in Dayton
Those of you who know me, know that I am still in Dayton, Ohio. Today was full of surprises.
Late this afternoon my husband yelled for me. He had his camera and in his sights was a strange animal. NOT A CAT, he said. Well, the pictures he hastily snapped later showed the critter to be a 'Possum.
I did not know they had them in Dayton, but it makes sense. Something has been getting into the neighborhood trash ever since we got here.
I've read up on them, and they are gentle, fascinating creatures. Please check it out for yourself, as these marsupials deserve respect and our help to survive. You may have one living close by your house as well.
Thanks Possum Pop and the "Possum Pages" at http://opossum.craton.net.

This Springer Spaniel needs a home.
From: Martii
Subject: Senior Springer Needs a Home
To: springergirlz@msn.com
Date: Tuesday, December 8, 2009, 3:35 PM
I am sending this e-mail out as I am looking for a home that might be interested in giving this beautiful senior dog a home. I have tried all my other options and the only thing that I have come up with is transporting her to Missouri. I don't like this option and would much rather keep her here. Her owner has lost her job, is losing her apartment and is going to have to move to the Northeast part of the states. She cannot keep her Springer. She has raised her since a puppy and this is just tearing her apart to have to give up the dog. I have attached a picture of her - Thatcher is her name, she is 11 years old, and still is very active. She has a minor heart problem and is on meds for this - they cost about $14.00 a month. Thatcher is a wonderful, loving Springer and we just want to make sure she has a great home to spend the rest of her life in. Thank you so much for your consideration. Please respond to my e-mail and/or give me a call if you could open up your hearts for this beautiful Springer. Swallows
She was hit by a car as she swooped low across the road.
Here he brought her food and attended to her with love and compassion.
He brought her food again but was shocked to find her dead.
He tried to move her ... A rarely-seen effort for swallows!
Aware that his sweetheart is dead and will never come back to him again, he cries with adoring love.
He stood beside her, saddened of her death.
Finally aware she would never return to him, he stood beside her body with sadness and sorrow..
A lot of people cried after seeing these photos in America and Europe and even India.
The photographer sold these pictures for a nominal fee to the most famous
newspaper in France.
All copies of that edition were sold out on the day these pictures were published.
And many people think animals don't have a brain or feelings?????
You have just witnessed Love and Sorrow ... felt by God's creatures.

Emergency, Kittens being tortured & murdered!
I have attached a picture of Junior. Please look at this poor kitten. Jacque, SAFE Animal Director
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PLEASE BE AN ANGEL TO THESE POOR KITTIES!
Help us save as many as we can…
This week SAFE got a call for help and stepped up to the challenge when no one else would.
An angel named Fawn explained to us that cats and kittens of all ages were been tortured and brutally killed in her mobile home park. Fawn lives on social security and has been paying to get these cats spayed and vaccinated, all out of her own pocket. She has found quite a few dead cats/kittens around the mobile home park: one in the dryer, others shot by paint guns and one pregnant momma cat killed by what she called a marble gun. She knows people in the park are doing these horrible crimes and that they will not stop. She said she called TV stations, newspapers, PACC, the Humane Society, and many other rescue groups. Jacque, our director at SAFE, is the only one to call her back.
SAFE is trying to get as many cats/kittens out of there as we can.
Fawn found an injured kitten and was praying for financial help to take it to the vet. The only group that would help her financially (Jacque called them and asked for their help) only does it on a loan basis - she has to pay them back. She took the kitten (Junior-an 11 week grey/black tabby) into Santa Cruz Animal Hospital, they don't know what is wrong and are keeping him to provide antibiotics and IV fluids. Junior has to leave by TODAY (Saturday), whether he is improving or not - that is the only financial guaranty for payment the other group will allow.
We reassured Fawn we would try to get as many donations as possible for Junior’s medical expenses. SAFE has picked up Junior and we are continuing to provide the medical care he needs. It is long term and still ify at the moment. He is eating, drinking and trying very hard. He is very wobbly on his feet at this time.
In addition to Junior, there are probably 20 cats/kittens that need to get out of this nightmarish situation. Obviously SAFE can't take them all but we want to help as many as possible. A lot of the females have been spayed, but none of the males have been neutered. These are not wild feral cats, just cats/kittens that were abandoned by their families and left to fend for themselves. Fawn has been an angel to these poor cats is feeding them all and trying to keep them healthy. We want to show her that we care and so does the community. Please help us give Fawn and these babies a little hope and faith when they need it most. Any little bit helps and no donation is too small. Send donations to SAFE, 3661 N Campbell Ave #220, Tucson, AZ 85719. Please mark it for trailer park kitties.
Thank you for taking the time to read this story and for helping us save lives!

Busy, Busy, Busy!
I feel like I've been out of touch for a while, and I have been. I've had lots of rescue work to do recently. We have had 4 new dogs here since I last wrote.
We rescued a mommy dog in the desert near the border of Mexico in the Nogales area.
We have a kind hearted volunteer who brings up animals frequently for us. She is a Sheriff's deputy and she spends off hours finding places for all the animals she finds out there.
Anyway, that week she brought us Pixie, a darling but depleted little Shepherd mix. She looks like a miniature German Shepherd, but she has a stumpy tail.
She was skin and bones and scars, but her pup was fat and sassy. He looked like a little Chow. His name is Gunther. Just full of P*ss and vinegar, that little one.
Pixie had a bad case of worms, it really freaked me out when I saw it. She's been treated, and she is fine now. She's warm and loving and completely housetrained.
I just can't imagine how she ended up with a pup, dumped in the desert to fend for herself. She had tape worms, which is a sign she'd been living off of birds and rabbits she caught herself out there. Breaks your heart.
Gunther is adopted, and hopefully Pixie will be finding her forever home soon.

Greyfriar's Bobby
This is a wonderful book, and it's really a true story.
I have seen the grave, and the statue of the wee dog.
Let his loyalty and devotion be a lesson to us all
The Story
In 1858, a man named John Gray was buried in old Greyfriars Churchyard. His grave levelled by the hand of time, and unmarked by any stone, became scarcely discernible; but, although no human interest seemed to attach to it.
The sacred spot was not wholly disregarded or forgotten. For fourteen years the dead man's faithful dog kept constant watch and guard over the grave until his own death in 1872.
The famous Skye Terrier, Greyfriars Bobby was so devoted to his master John Gray, even in death, for fourteen years Bobby lay on the grave only leaving for food.
It is reported that a daily occurance of people from all walks of life would stand at the entrance of the Kirkyard waiting for the one o'clock gun and the appearance of Bobby leaving the grave for his midday meal.
Bye Baby
Bye Baby
No more lonely cold nights or hearing that I'm bad
No more growling belly from the meals I never had.
No more scorching sunshine with a water bowl that's dry.
No more complaining neighbors about the noise when I cry.
No more hearing "shut up", "get down" or "get out of here"!
No more feeling disliked, only peace is in the air.
Euthanasia is a blessing, though some still can't see
why I was ever born If I weren't meant to be.
My last day of living was the best I ever had.
Someone held me very close, I could see she was very sad.
I kissed the lady's face, and she hugged me as she cried.
I wagged my tail to thank her, then I closed my eyes and died.

She has been spayed, and is microchipped and ready to go.
She is sweet and funny. Call 520-349-8637 or go to www.safeanimals.com to apply for her.

Hasta Luego Taco Bell Dog
Hasta luego, Taco Bell dog . . . We’ll miss you!
July 22nd, 2009, 11:40 am · 11 Comments · posted by Samantha Gowen, Pet Tales editor
You only have to yap the phrase and a visage of tiny dog with huge ears and a big toothy grin comes to mind.
“Yo quiero Taco Bell.”
Gidget — the Chihuahua made famous by the Taco Bell advertising campaign — died of a stroke at age 15.
Gidget’s owner, Karen McElhatton, tells Usmagazine.com Gidget passed away Sunday.
“She had a good day and was running around as normal,” McElhatton, tells Usmagazine. “We’re happy that she was very well off right until the end.”
Are there tacos in heaven?
* Yes
In addition to her gig as “spokesdog” for Irvine-based Taco Bell, Gidget appeared in a commercial for the ’90s edition of Trivial Pursuit and played Bruiser’s mom in Legally Blonde 2 (Moonie, the dog who played Bruiser, was her best friend and sometime roommate at Chipperton’s house).
